Fortunately, we know there is a better way. Children deserve to breathe fresh air and have a healthy future. And electric school buses are a great way to achieve those goals. Buses are not only inert at stops and on campuses, but also produce transmissions along the way that affect all residents of the community.Electric buses eliminate both local and general noise, allowing everyone to breathe easier.
Studies have shown that fuel, operation and maintenance costs are much lower. Electric bus manufacturers estimate that electricity costs are 80% lower and maintenance costs of electric buses are 60% lower, while replacing brake pads and seats. The amount of coolant is much larger than for diesel buses. School budgets are tight and it's hard to lose the fuel and maintenance savings on electric buses.
The total cost of ownership (TCO) of electric vehicles is much higher, but the entry price of an electric bus is even higher. So incentive programs like the California Zero Emissions Program (HVIP), which can provide up to $235,000 to buy an electric school bus, are an important way to fill the gap and encourage communities to invest in electricity that can help kids breathe better air while saving money. Other states such as Massachusetts, New York, Michigan and Washington are also offering incentives for electric buses, but innovative leasing programs could help lower the cost of entering the electric bus market.
Another advantage of electric buses is that they tend to have relatively short routes and a lot of immobility in the surrounding car parks day and night. This reduces the overall cost of charging infrastructure in schools, giving them enough time to fully charge with powerful AC charging and power management. By installing the right combination of fast charging and continuous power solution and intelligent energy management software, schools can reduce infrastructure costs and avoid unprofitable energy bills.
Driving an electric bus is a much more pleasant experience than driving a noisy, polluting diesel bus, but electric buses also reduce the driver's exposure to pollution. The relatively long stops between routes are ideal for light recharging, and drivers can feel good knowing the bus is helping kids stay healthy and learn in an environmentally friendly way.
Drivers love that it's easy to recharge and can't be spilled like diesel or gasoline.
School buses are just the beginning of cleaning the air in our communities. California, New York, Seattle and other cities have announced their intention to transition to zero-emission fleets. This means that by 2045, 33% of all transit buses in the US will be electric.
We believe that electricity for school buses is a smart move.
