Federal Tax Credit for Home Charging Stations

7 Mar 2023 9 mins to read
Homeowners are increasingly turning to electric vehicles to cut their environmental footprint, but the large upfront cost of electric vehicles combined with the additional cost of installing a home charging station can be prohibitive. The good news is that there is a federal tax credit available to homeowners who purchase and install a home charging station. This tax credit can help offset some of the installation and equipment costs of charging an electric vehicle at home.
Federal Tax Credit for Home Charging Stations
Summary:

What Is the Federal Tax Credit?

The federal tax credit for home charging stations is a dollar-for-dollar reduction of up to $1,000 for the cost of purchasing and installing a home charging station. The credit is available for all-electric vehicles powered by either a plug-in hybrid or a pure electric powertrain. The credit is only available for purchases and installations made between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2022.

What Does the Tax Credit Cover?

The tax credit covers the cost of the equipment used to install a home electric vehicle charging station, such as electric wiring, conduit, circuit breakers, and plugs. It also covers the cost of installation itself. To qualify for the federal tax credit, homeowners must have purchased and installed an approved electric vehicle charging station.

Who Is Eligible for the Tax Credit?

The federal tax credit is available to taxpayers who own and occupy a home in which an approved electric vehicle charging station was installed. Homeowners must also have purchased the charging station and its installation between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2022. The tax credit does not apply to leasing agreements or to charging stations that are part of an employer-provided benefit.

How to Claim the Tax Credit

To claim the federal tax credit, taxpayers must fill out form 1040 and attach tax form 8990 to their tax return. Taxpayers should include their total cost of the electric vehicle charging station and its installation on form 8990. Any amount received as part of the tax credit must be included as additional income on line 8a of form 1040. The tax credit cannot exceed the amount of tax owed.

Benefits of the Tax Credit

  • Offset the cost of electric vehicle charging station installation
  • Encourages the use of electric vehicles and their associated infrastructure
  • Reduces the total cost of owning and operating an electric vehicle
  • Provides more options for charging an electric vehicle at home

The federal tax credit for home charging stations is a great way for homeowners to offset the cost of electric vehicle charging station installation. By providing a dollar-for-dollar reduction of up to $1,000, the credit can significantly reduce the upfront cost of owning and operating an electric vehicle. With incentives like this in place, the shift to electric vehicles is becoming more and more appealing each day.

You'll need to fill out IRS Form 8911 and attach it to your tax return. It's pretty simple!
The federal tax credit is up to $1,000, or 30% of the cost of the charging station and installation.
Wait, what's a home charging station? Is it like a gas pump for electric cars?

Yep, it's where you plug in your electric car to charge it up. And now you can get a tax credit for installing one at home!
Yes, you need to have purchased or leased an eligible electric vehicle before installing the charging station.
I'm still confused. How do I claim the tax credit on my taxes?

Too bad I don't own a home. Can renters still get a tax credit for installing a charging station?

Are there any restrictions on who can get the tax credit?
That's dope! How much can I save on my taxes?
Does that mean I can also get a tax credit for installing a charging station at work?

Nope, the tax credit only applies to home charging stations.

This is a great way to encourage more people to buy electric cars and reduce our carbon footprint.
Guess it's time to start saving up for a down payment on a house!
Nope, only homeowners can claim the federal tax credit for home charging stations. But some states offer their own incentives!
