Overview of Different Types of Batteries Commonly Used in Electric Cars

16 Mar 2023 9 mins to read
Rundown of EV Battery Types Electric Vehicles (EVs) are powered by rechargeable batteries. These batteries come in all shapes and sizes, depending on the specific needs of the vehicle. We’re gonna break down the three main types of EV batteries.
Overview of Different Types of Batteries Commonly Used in Electric Cars
Summary:

Lead-Acid Batteries

Lead-Acid batteries are the OG of EV batteries, having been around since 1859. They’re the most affordable, but there’s a reason cheapness comes with a few drawbacks. Namely, they’re not as powerful or efficient as other battery types.
  • Slower charging times
  • Relatively heavy
  • Not as powerful or efficient as other battery types

Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-Ion batteries have been the most common type of EV battery since 1991. They’re a step up from Lead-Acid, offering more energy efficiency and faster charging times.
  • Ideal for medium-length trips
  • Pretty lightweight compared to lead-acid
  • Faster charging times than lead-acid
  • Compact design

Solid-State Batteries

Solid-State batteries are the new kids on the block as far as EV batteries go. They’re incredibly powerful and efficient, but they cost a pretty penny and aren’t available in any EV yet.
  • Incredibly powerful and efficient
  • Tend to be more expensive than other models
  • Lightweight
  • Potential for lightning quick charging times

Pros and Cons of Each Battery Type

Lead-Acid batteries are the most affordable, but they’re definitely not the most efficient. Lithium-Ion batteries offer a good balance between price and power, and they dominate the market right now. Solid-State batteries are the most powerful, but they’re pricey and hard to come by.

Lead-Acid Pros

  • Affordable
  • Easy to find and replace

Lead-Acid Cons

  • Heavy
  • Inferior energy efficiency
  • Slower charging times

Lithium-Ion Pros

  • Sufficient charging times
  • Lightweight
  • Good balance of power and price

Lithium-Ion Cons

  • Costlier than lead-acid
  • Only suitable for medium-length trips

Solid-State Pros

  • Incredible energy efficiency
  • Lightweight
  • Incredibly fast charging times

Solid-State Cons

  • Expensive
  • Not available in EV models yet

So there’s the lowdown on EV battery types. Before you buy your electric vehicle, it’s important to consider the advantages and drawbacks of each battery type. The size, range and price of your vehicle will all depend on the type of battery that powers it!
